Giacinto 'Gino' Sasso, 73, Rutherford Resident

RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Giacinto "Gino" J. Sasso, of Rutherford, died on Sunday, Feb. 12. He was 73.

Born in Hoboken, Sasso earned bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from Rutgers. He was a nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopist for 39 years. He retired from Hoffmann-La Roche, in Nutley, in 2012. 

"His favorite pastimes were horse racing handicapping and taking trips to the beach in Spring Lake with his wife Sandra," information from the funeral home noted. He enjoyed reading, math, watching science fiction movies and fondly remembering his Shetland Sheepdog, Jody. 

Sasso was an active member of St. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, and a past choir member and treasurer.

He is survived by his wife Sandra (Kopycinski) Sasso; son Damiano and his wife Jennifer; siblings Louise Bloomer and her husband Tom, Frances Kovarcik and her husband Robert, Pat Romano, and Rose Scardigno and her husband Sam; and nieces and nephews. 

Sasso was predeceased by his parents, Damiano and Biagia (Scardigno) Sasso, and his brother-in-law, Peter Romano. 

The funeral will be held at the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 17, gathering at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:30 prayer service, followed by interment in Graceland Memorial Park Cemetery, 1900 Galloping Hill Rd., in Kenilworth.
